How do you calculate the feeding amount?

When calculating the correct amount of our food for your dog we use the predictive equation of the NRC which accounts for several factors including:

  • The calorie content of our food
  • Age of the dog
  • Exercise level
  • The weight and body condition of the dog
  • Whether or not your dog has been spayed or neutered

Our feeding calculator will easily establish the feeding range they fall into. This are a starting point. A very energetic dog will need more calories to maintain their weight than a more sedentary dog, but generally, they will fall within the range given in the calculator.

We cannot account for every single dog and their individual needs, that is why our suggestion is a starting point and adjustments should be made based on body condition.

Always start at the lower end of the range, we find most dogs are perfectly happy here.

If you have more than one dog, look up the feeding amount for each dog individually. Do not add the dogs weights together then look up the feeding amount. Our feeding range accounts for metabolic rate which varies depending on the size of dog.

A large breed dog has a relatively slower metabolic rate than a small dog which means they need fewer calories per kilogram of body weight.

Therefore a 10 kg dog would not need 50% of the calorie requirements of a 20 kg dog.

If your dog is over or under weight we recommend feeding the amount suggested for the weight they should be.

Our food is a complete food made in line with Fediaf recommendations.
