Sickness
Discovering your dog has been sick can be a worry, however, it isn’t always a cause for concern. If your dog is being sick regularly, we would always recommend consulting your vet, especially if there is any blood in their vomit, if they are lethargic, and have diarrhoea too.
If you are currently transitioning over to Wolfworthy and have noticed your dog has been sick, try not to worry. In order to give your dog the most seamless transition, it is best to do this over 7 days. Check the feeding amount, often when there are issues like sickness or soft stools, it is due to a little too much food. If you are unsure, please send us a message and we will be more than happy to check this for you. During the transition, it’s a really good idea to limit treats, this keeps your dog’s diet simple and will hopefully help to prevent any issues which may occur.
If you have already transitioned over to Wolfworthy and your dog has been sick once or twice, it is a good idea to consider the following things:
- Could they have eaten something they shouldn’t have whilst out and about on a walk, or even at home or around friends and family? Dogs have a habit of eating anything and everything they can get hold of and are blissfully unaware of the effect that can have on their stomachs.
- Could it be a bug? If it is, your dog will probably be subdued as well. You can call your vet to check if they have noticed a higher number of dogs picking something up in your area. They will also be able to advise a course of action.
- When is your dog being sick? If your dog is bringing up bile late at night or early morning (or some unknown hour in between) it is most likely due to having an empty stomach. When the stomach is empty, it causes acid to build up and this can irritate your dog’s stomach lining causing them to be sick. If this happens regularly, as advised earlier it is always best to get it checked out with your vet. If they confirm there are no other health issues, to help prevent them from being sick, you can either feed them a little later at night or feed them a little earlier in the morning to prevent the acid build-up.
- If your dog is being sick as soon as they have eaten, the chances are they are having just a bit too much food, or they are eating too quickly and have gulped down lots of air. In this case, always check the feeding amounts by using our super helpful feeding guides. If you are unsure, please do not hesitate to get in touch with your dog's breed, age, weight, body condition (overweight, underweight or just right), expected adult weight if they are under 12 months and if they are spayed/neutered and we can check this for you. If the feeding amount looks to be ok, then it could be a good idea to try a slow feeder. This prevents a dog from eating their dinner too quickly and so in turn will help with the sickness.
Do you love the idea of feeding raw but hate the mess, fuss or your dog just won't eat it? Wolfworthy is the dry food alternative to feeding raw. It has the same health benefits but is easy to store, handle and travel with. So you can relax knowing your dog is satisfied, healthy and well-cared for but without all the hassle.
