Why is my dog eating poo?

Copraphagia is when your dog eats its own or other animal's poop.

Lots of dogs will happily (if allowed) have a try of horse manure, cow pat, sheep poop or rabbit droppings. Some also eat their own stools.

There are theories as to why this happens but no scientific reason has been agreed upon.

Some suggest it is because the dog actually likes the taste/smell.

Others think it is because the poop may have some nutritional value such as undigested fat or protein.

Some female dogs will eat the poo from their puppies to 'clean up' and keep the den/bed area free from anything that will attract pests or preditors.

This can lead to some learned behaviour from puppies mimiking their mothers which they will hopefully grow out of once in a new home.

What to do?

Try to restrict access to any poo, keep on a lead when out walking. Clear up straight away if your dog poo's in your own garden.

If they poop and ignore it, give lots of praise or treats.

Check the feeding amount is correct. This ensures your dog is not pooping out any undigested food which potentially may be interesting to them.

Again make sure the feeding amount is correct so your dog isn't hungry. Perhaps alter the timing of the meals so they perhaps eat before going on the walk etc.

If the behaviour continues it is worth considering a behaviourist who may be able to help you get to the bottom of the matter.

Do you love the idea of feeding raw but hate the mess, fuss or your dog just won't eat it? Wolfworthy is the dry food alternative to feeding raw. It has the same health benefits but is easy to store, handle and travel with. So you can relax knowing your dog is satisfied, healthy and well-cared for but without all the hassle.
